Trailway News: Summit Season
The final days of summer are here, and that means the majority of this year’s northbound Appalachian Trail (A.T.) thru-hikers are approaching the end of their journeys. Congratulations to all of those who have completed this epic adventure, and good luck to those who are still working toward officially becoming an A.T. 2,000-Miler!
For those who will soon be entering Baxter State Park, make it a priority to #FinishWell when you reach the summit of Katahdin — celebrate quietly, save alcohol for later, and hike in small groups. By celebrating quietly and considerately, you can honor both your accomplishment and the sacred land you have worked so hard to reach.

For those who finish their A.T. journeys this year, don’t forget to submit your 2,000-Miler applications. Also, we want to hear about (and see) your adventures! Submit your photos, videos, and stories for a chance for them to be featured on the ATC website, A.T. Journeys magazine, and our social media channels!

McAfee Knob Trailhead Shuttle Service Launches
Just in time for peak leaf season, this service will help alleviate unsafe parking conditions and take the stress out of finding a parking spot for your McAfee Knob A.T. hike.
The 2023 Appalachian Trail Calendar is Now Available
Enjoy a daily reminder of the Trail as you record upcoming events, appointments, and all of your 2023 A.T. hiking plans! You can receive this full-color, limited edition calendar (in addition to other ATC member benefits) when you make a donation of $75 or more before November 1.
Trail Updates
A ban on all open flames and charcoal fires has been issued by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Much of the A.T. in Massachusetts passes through DCR land — hikers should avoid making campfires and exercise caution when using camp stoves.
Bear activity has been reported at Painter Branch Campsite (NOBO mile 243.8), including a bear that took a backpack. All area visitors should use caution and keep in mind that bears can roam over large distances in search of food.

Join the Mid-Atlantic Trail Crew – We’re now accepting applications for multiple crew sessions from September-November. Spend time in the great outdoors, get in a healthy workout, and help maintain and protect your Trail!
Attend the A.T. Hall of Fame Induction Event on October 1 – This outdoor ceremony in honor of this year’s inductees — including longtime ATC Information Services Manager Laurie Potteiger — begins at 1:30 p.m. at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. The ceremony is free but registration is required due to limited space — send an email to atmbanquet@gmail.com to register.
