The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) has received a report of bear activity at Painter Branch Campsite (NOBO mile 243.8), including that a bear took a backpack.
All area visitors should use caution and keep in mind that bears can roam over large distances in search of food. Hikers should never leave food unattended and be sure to keep a clean camp and store all food and “smellables” properly. ATC recommends that all Appalachian Trail (A.T.) campers use a bear canister for the duration of their trip.

Bear encounters along the A.T. should be reported via the ATC’s Bear Encounter Report form.
