Trailway News: Step into Summer
The first day of summer is just around the corner! Starting this week, we will release a new issue of Trailway News every other week throughout the summer months. We hope this will encourage you to spend more time outside (and away from your inbox) while enabling us to focus on a variety of projects along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). The Rewilding of Max Patch
Known for its panoramic views of the southern Appalachians, Max Patch was overwhelmed by crowds in recent years, causing long-lasting impacts to the area and the A.T. hiking experience. Thanks to the dedication and collaboration of the ATC, the Carolina Mountain Club, and the U.S. Forest Service, this icon of the Trail is now undergoing a variety of restoration efforts that favor native flora and fauna while keeping it open and accessible to hikers and visitors.

A.T. Reroute Opens in Pennsylvania, Preserving Vistas and Improving Trail Sustainability
Part of a multi-year relocation project near Palmerton and Lehigh Gap, this 3.25-mile-long relocation moves the route of the A.T. along views that are likely to remain unobstructed as important environmental remediation work in the area continues.

Four Quick Tips for Summer Hikes
Warm weather, long days, and vacations make summer a great time to plan a hike on the Trail! However, this time of year also poses some unique challenges that you should be prepared for before you head out.

Members of Congress Voice Support for Increased A.T. Funding – The ATC is honored by the work of 43 U.S. Senators and Representatives to make the case to ensure proper support of the Trail. While the A.T. is the most successful public-private partnership in conservation history, and the ATC is hard at work raising funds to support essential Trail operations, the National Park Service staff who work for the Trail need to be supported themselves. We hope you’ll join us in thanking these Members of Congress for their support — you can read the full text of their respective letters by clicking here and here.
Nominations Open until July 15 for ATC’s Board of Directors – We are looking for candidates who can add diversity of thought to the current Board, and can demonstrate a passion for the A.T. and the mission of the ATC. A.T. Vista 2022 Program Canceled – Due to a lower-than-expected registration for A.T. Vista 2022, as of June 12, 2022, the program has been canceled. Full refunds to all registrants will be made. A big thanks to the volunteer organizers who put in many hours of time and effort to develop an exciting program. Stay informed about any upcoming A.T. Vista announcements by visiting atvista.org.
