For hiker safety, officials with the Blue Ridge Parkway have closed the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) from the side trail to the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center to Rockfish Gap because of a wildfire near Humpback Rocks (NOBO miles 854.3 to 864.6; the visitor center is 1.3 mi west of the Trail via the side trail).
The wildfire was previously reported as fully contained but jumped the fire line last night (the fire line is a raked line/dug trench that is cleared of all debris by crews to contain the fire).
Hikers should avoid this area. Hikers already on the A.T. should plan to shuttle around this section. Note that the Blue Ridge Parkway has narrow shoulders and many curves. If you decide to walk along the parkway between the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center and Rockfish Gap, exercise extreme caution on the road and make sure oncoming vehicles can see you. Hikers can also get off/back on the A.T. at the Dripping Rock parking area instead.
Fire danger is extremely high along the A.T. from Georgia through Virginia and there are several burn bans in place. Do not have a campfire and be extremely careful with camp stoves. Pack out all trash, especially cigarette butts.
We will update this notice with more information as we receive it.
