Officials with the U.S. Forest Service are asking area visitors to help protect rare plants and delicate ecosystems in the Dragon’s Tooth Special Biological Area by staying on marked trails and not camping in the area. This Special Biological Area encompasses the Dragon’s Tooth Trail and the Boy Scout Trail within the Jefferson National Forest, from the Dragon’s Tooth parking lot to the Appalachian Trail (A.T.).

Camping is prohibited along the Dragon’s Tooth Trail from the Dragon’s Tooth parking lot on VA Route 311 to where the trail intersects with the A.T. at Lost Spectacles Gap (NOBO mile 703.1). Camping is also prohibited along the Boy Scout Trail from the Dragon’s Tooth parking lot to where the trail intersects with the A.T. (NOBO mile 704.1).

Dispersed camping along the A.T. is permitted on National Forest lands in this area. Camping restrictions are still in place along the A.T. from VA Route 624 to U.S. Route 220 (NOBO miles 704.6 to 730.3).

Area visitors should plan their itineraries accordingly to avoid camping along both the Dragon’s Tooth Trail and the Boy Scout Trail and stay on marked trails. For more information, contact the Eastern Divide Ranger District of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
