The U.S. Forest Service in partnership with the ATC and local Trail Clubs plan to conduct prescribed burns along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in Vermont this spring at Arms Hill field and Donaldson field in Pomfret, VT (NOBO miles ~1,741.5 and 1,741.7). Burns may begin as soon as tomorrow.
A.T. visitors may encounter smoke during and after the burns and may also encounter fire crews. The Trail in these areas may be temporarily closed during the burns. Visitors and hikers should follow all instructions from fire crews and posted signs, and be prepared to wait for the Trail to reopen or find an alternative route.
Prescribed burns are weather-dependent and may be scheduled on short notice. To learn more about prescribed burn and their benefits, visit the Forest Service website.
