Alert

05/14/2025

Due to heavy rain, there are flood warnings in several areas along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in northern Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. A.T. hikers and visitors should be aware that:

  • The Byron Footbridge in Harpers Ferry that the Trail follows across the Potomac River will be closed tonight due to anticipated flooding (NOBO mile 1,026.7), and will likely remain closed until the risk of flooding passes. There is a flood warning for Harpers Ferry through tomorrow. Hikers will need to wait until the bridge reopens or shuttle around.
  • Shenandoah National Park is advising visitors to avoid trails with water crossings and rock scrambles, and that some access roads may be impassable.
  • There are some stream crossings along the A.T. in Maryland that can be dangerous during heavy rain. Learn about stream crossing safety on our River & Stream Crossings page.

For the latest forecast, visit weather.gov. We will update this notice with more information as we receive it.
