Update: The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference (NYNJTC) has mapped the following temporary detour for the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) through Bear Mountain State Park. Due to storm damage, the A.T. in the park is currently closed and hikers should follow the detour. Until the Trail is repaired and re-opened, the detour will be considered the official route for 2,000-miler eligibility. Hikers who had to skip over the Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks sections prior to this detour taking effect are also still eligible for 2,000-miler status.

For more information (including a larger image of this map) and updates, visit the NYNJTC website.

Bear Mountain State Park remains closed. Harriman State Park has begun to reopen.

Detour descriptions (northbound direction):

  • All roadwalk: Turn right onto Seven Lakes Drive and follow for 2.2 miles to the traffic circle. Turn left into the parking lot and follow the sidewalks north to the Bear Mountain Inn.
  • Trail and roadwalk: Turn right onto 1777W Trail (Red 1777 Blazes) and follow for 0.6 mile. Turn left onto Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail (S-BM Yellow Blazes) and follow for 0.65 mile. Turn right onto Seven Lakes Drive and follow for 2.2 miles to the traffic circle. Turn left into the parking lot and follow the sidewalks north to the Bear Mountain Inn
From the Bear Mountain Inn hikers will be able to rejoin the A.T. and proceed north across the Bear Mountain Bridge.

Update: The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) on Bear Mountain (NOBO mile 1,407.9) remains impassable and Bear Mountain State Park is still closed. Harriman State Park is also closed. Hikers can shuttle around these sections by leaving the Trail south at N.Y. Route 17 (NOBO mile 1,387.5) and north at N.Y. Route 9D (NOBO mile 1,411.0; note that U.S. 6/Bear Mountain Bridge Road is currently closed from the intersection with 9D south to Annsville Circle – 9D will have to be accessed from the north). Hikers and shuttle drivers should follow directions from local officials, respect all road closed signs, and not attempt to cross flooded roads.

While the ATC has not yet received reports of damage to the A.T. east of the Hudson River, there have been reports of flooding in Pawling, N.Y., and there are several road closures in that area. For up-to-date information about state road closures, visit 511 NY. For local road closures in Pawling, visit the Village of Pawling’s website.

For updated Trail conditions and closures in N.Y., visit the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference website.

Thru-hikers and section hikers shuttling around Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks and flooded sections elsewhere are still eligible for 2,000-miler status.

07/10/2023

The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) on Bear Mountain (NOBO mile 1,407.9) is impassable due to a wash-out and Bear Mountain State Park will be closed until further notice due to major storm damage. Hikers should plan their itineraries accordingly to avoid the area. Thru-hikers and section hikers needing to bypass Bear Mountain due to the wash-out are still eligible for 2,000-miler status.
