Officials with the White Mountain National Forest warn visitors of increased bear activity at campsites and along trails in and around the Pemigewasset Wilderness, including along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) and at Liberty Springs Campsite (NOBO mile 1,826.7). Staff with the national forest report that they “have received near daily reports about food-conditioned bears interacting with hikers and campers” in this area. The A.T. skirts the Pemigewasset Wilderness from where it begins to follow the Franconia Ridge Trail to just north of Ethan Pond Shelter (NOBO miles 1,827.0 to approx. 1,849.0).
Hikers should exercise caution, properly store all food and scented items at night, keep a clean camp, and pack out all trash and food waste. Never leave food unattended – even for a moment such as a quick trip to the privy or to check out a view. Never sleep with your food.
The ATC strongly recommends that all overnight hikers use a bear canister for the duration of their time on the A.T. Hikers are strongly encouraged to use the provided bear boxes when available at designated campsites and shelters. Bear canisters are available to rent for free at all White Mountain National Forest ranger stations and visitor centers.
