Prescribed Burn

Update

03/01/2025

Update: The prescribed burn at Max Patch is scheduled for Monday, 3/3/25, pending weather. The A.T. will be closed during the burn from Max Patch Road to Lemon Gap (NOBO miles 254.6 to 260.8). The closure will likely last most of the day on Monday.

During the burn, hikers can either choose to wait for the Trail to reopen, or can walk Max Patch Road to Lemon Gap, going around the closed section (the road walk is ~3.9 miles). Hikers walking along the road should be very careful and watch for vehicles.

Always follow instructions from fire crews and signs. Smoke effects may linger in the area for several days following the burn.

We will update this notice with more information as we receive it.

The U.S. Forest Service is planning to conduct a prescribed burn on Max Patch this spring. The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) on Max Patch may be temporarily closed during the burn (NOBO mile 255.4).

Prescribed burns are weather-dependent and advanced notice of a burn is not always possible. Visitors and hikers should always respect closures and follow all instructions from fire crews and posted signs. To learn more about the benefits of prescribed burns, visit the Forest Service’s website.
