Update: Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest has issued a forest-wide burn ban, which includes the A.T. through Georgia. Do not have campfires and be careful when using a camp stove or when smoking. Pack out all trash, especially cigarette butts.

The ATC strongly urges hikes to not have campfires from Davenport Gap to the New River at Pearisburg, VA, regardless of whether an official burn ban is in place, because the downed trees left by Hurricane Helene make perfect fuel for wildfires to spread quickly. Always follow instructions from official burn bans.

A red flag warning has been issued for the entire Appalachian Trail in Georgia (NOBO mile 0.0 to NOBO mile 78.3). This means there is an elevated fire risk. Hikers should avoid making campfires and be careful when using a camp stove or when smoking. Pack out all trash, especially cigarette butts.
