Alert

10/09/2024

The ATC received a report of two potentially habituated bears near the parking lot for St. Johns Ledges on River Road outside of Kent (NOBO mile 1,478.1). The bears were unafraid of humans despite the hikers making loud noises and honking a car horn, and even began slowly approaching.

Appalachian Trail visitors and hikers in this area should exercise caution. Backpackers should properly store all food and scented items at night, keep a clean camp, and pack out all trash and food waste. Never leave food unattended – even for a moment such as a quick trip to the privy or to check out a view. Never sleep with your food.

The ATC strongly recommends that all overnight hikers use a bear canister for the duration of their time on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). Hikers are strongly encouraged to use the provided bear boxes and food storage devices when available at designated campsites and shelters.

Learn more about bear canisters, bear safety, and what to do if you encounter a bear on the A.T. here. Report bear encounters here.
