Update: While the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) has not received reports of vehicle break-ins so far this year for the McAfee Knob and Dragons Tooth parking areas, there is always potential for vandalism at trailhead parking lots. High visitation lots like the ones serving McAfee Knob and Dragons Tooth are especially at risk. Visitors should not leave valuables in their vehicles and always lock unattended vehicles while hiking.

Any vehicle break-in should be reported to local law enforcement. You can also report trailhead break-ins to the ATC and National Park Service law enforcement using our Incident Report Form at appalachiantrail.org/incidents.

Summer 2021

Multiple vehicle break-ins have been reported at the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) parking areas for McAfee Knob and Dragons Tooth, both along Virginia Highway 311 in Roanoke County. Cash, credit cards, and other valuables were stolen. These parking areas have been targeted for vehicle vandalism in the past and may not be the best choice for long-term parking. Visitors are advised to avoid leaving valuables in their vehicles and to always lock unattended vehicles while hiking.

Any vehicle break-in should be reported to local law enforcement. You can also report this break-in to the ATC and National Park Service law enforcement using our Incident Report Form at appalachiantrail.org/incidents.
