A.T. State-By-State Photo Contest
The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, traversing some of the most scenic landscapes through 14 eastern states from Georgia to Maine. In 2023, we want to highlight the unique character and beauty of each state that the Trail passes through — and we need your help to do it!
The 2023 State-by-State Photo Contest is a chance for photographers to share their awe-inspiring photos of the Trail from each of its 14 states. Throughout the year, we’ll be opening submissions for each state one at a time, beginning in Georgia and finishing in Maine. For a full contest timeline, scroll to the section beneath the submission form.

We are looking for a wide variety of photo types, including:
- Scenic views and natural beauty on the Trail.
- Shelters and other Trail structures.
- Hikers and other visitors recreating responsibly on the A.T. (NO Leave No Trace principle violations).
- Native plants and wildlife (just be sure to keep your distance).
- Scenes from A.T. Communities™.
In addition to this contest page, the photos selected for each state will be featured throughout our various platforms — including our website, newsletters, and social media pages. And for each state contest, one photographer from each contest will be randomly selected to receive an A.T. T-shirt and other assorted prizes!
