Enjoy a day on the Appalachian Trail while learning and practicing what being a trail maintainer is all about.

What to expect:

This workshop will teach basic skills commonly used to maintain the Trail throughout the year such as learning best practices for safety, understanding various tools, vegetation management, trail marking, as well as learning how water diversion features work and how to maintain them. This essential trail maintenance work helps keep the Trail alive and is performed throughout the Trail by individuals (like you!) who volunteer their time in support of the Trail.

This workshop will consist of hiking along uneven and rocky terrain while carrying tools and will entirely be taking place outside away from cars or bathroom facilities. Protocol for using the bathroom in the woods will be discussed at the start of the workshop, please be sure to bring a personal hand sanitizer.

No prior experience is needed to attend this workshop, which is taking place on Sunday, November 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. near Linden, VA.

What to bring:

Please be sure to wear long pants, sturdy boots, and plenty of clothing layers that you do not mind getting dirty. Bring plenty of water and snacks for the day, lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, a rain jacket and personal work gloves, as well as a mask, hand sanitizer and a backpack to put everything in!

Participants may also want to consider bringing hand/foot warmers should the weather be cold. Please be sure to monitor the forecast and reach out to the work trip leader should you have any questions about appropriate clothing for the day.

It will also be important to bring any personal medications that may be needed while being outside for the day and any adaptive devices that may be needed such as hearing aids or prescriptive eyewear.

Participants are welcome to bring their own hard hat and safety glasses, however these will be provided.
