Update

09/11/2024

Over the last week the ATC has received reports of many dry water sources in North Carolina between Winding Stair Gap and the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC; NOBO miles 109.6 to 136.9). The region has had dry conditions recently, which are likely to persist through the fall. Appalachian Trail (A.T.) overnight hikers should be prepared for long water carries and have the ability to carry more than two liters of water.

Hikers can check crowd-sourced resources like FarOut or contact the Nantahala Hiking Club or the Nantahala Ranger District of the Nantahala National Forest for up-to-date conditions. Always track the forecast leading up to extended backpacking trips.
