Henry Edmonds

Volunteer

Volunteers and ATC staff shared their memories of Henry Edmonds, who passed away in April 2026. Hawk Metheny, ATC’s VP of Trail Management, recalled Henry as “a long-time dedicated volunteer with deep knowledge of history of the A.T. across Connecticut.”

“Since 1982, when Henry  first began to volunteer, he lived and breathed the Appalachian Trail in Connecticut,” recalls Dave Boone with AMC-CT.  “Henry had filled nearly every Connecticut A.T. Committee role at the AMC-Connecticut Chapter, including Chair. When he served as  Overseer of Lands, he revitalized our Natural Heritage activities.”

“I always looked forward to working with him; his love for the Trail was so clear to me from day one,” Marian Orlousky, ATC’s Director of Science and Stewardship shared. “Henry was pivotal in ensuring habitat protection and long-term monitoring for the globally imperiled metalmark butterfly population that lives along the A.T. in CT. That and rare plant monitoring were the projects on which I personally worked with Henry the most, but he filled so many different roles for the A.T. over the years. I know he will be very missed by the friends he made within the club.”

Dave wrote, “Henry received AMC-CT's first "Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2005 and in 2021 received the Lifetime Presidential Service Award for 4,000 hours of service to the Trail.  His knowledge of the history of the Trail in Connecticut was encyclopedic. He will be missed by his fellow volunteers in Connecticut and beyond."
