Volunteers with the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club (RATC) and the ATC Ridgerunner for the area report very dry conditions for the Virginia Triple Crown section of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) (approx. NOBO miles 697.5 to 731.1). Some water sources at overnight sites and shelters are dry, and others have a very low flow. Hikers should be prepared to scoop water from these pools/puddles, and be prepared to carry extra water. Water sources along the A.T. are natural and not potable; always treat backcountry water sources. Learn more on our Water & Water Treatment page and see the CDC water treatment table below.
