The ATC received a report of a potentially rabid skunk near Rice Field Shelter (NOBO mile 644.5). The skunk chased two hikers for quite a distance and was persistent in its pursuit, which is not normal for healthy, wild skunks.

Always keep a safe distance from wildlife on the A.T. and never approach wild animals.

If you observe a wild animal acting strangely on the A.T. in Virginia, please let Trail managers know by:

1. Submit an Incident Report about the encounter (or a Bear Encounter Report if it's with a bear)
2. Call the Virginia Dept. of Wildlife Resources toll-free wildlife conflict helpline at 1-855-571-9003
