For visitor safety, Roan High Knob Shelter (NOBO mile 379.3) is now closed due to structural concerns. Extensive repairs are planned for 2025. No camping is allowed within 60 feet of the shelter.
Camping is available at Ash Gap, 2.1 miles along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) to the south, and at Stan Murray Shelter, 5.2 miles north on the A.T.
A.T. visitors and hikers should plan their itineraries accordingly to avoid the shelter area. The entire Roan section of the A.T. is extremely popular, so it is important that all visitors practice Leave No Trace and use existing campsites.
