A wildfire is burning approximately 1.5 miles west of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) near Tellico Gap and Wesser Bald (NOBO mile 129.0 and 130.4). The A.T. remains open in this area, but hikers will likely encounter smoke and fire crews, including aircraft. Drivers in the area should proceed with caution and watch out for firefighters and equipment, especially on Deweese Road (which connects to Otter Creek Road just west of Tellico Gap).

There is currently a burn ban for the A.T. in North Carolina due to the high fire risk. Hikers should refrain from having campfires, be extremely careful with camp stoves, and follow all instructions from fire crews they encounter. Learn more about wildfire safety on the A.T.
