Severe thunderstorms are forecast through this evening for much of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) from North Carolina up through Vermont. The National Weather Service predicts that some of the storms will produce damaging gusts of winds and tornadoes and flash flooding is predicted in some areas. Tornado watches are in effect for parts of Virginia and Maryland. Flash flood watches are in effect for parts of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont.

The storms could blow down trees and cause damage to the Trail, infrastructure, and limit access to trailheads. Sections of the A.T. that were damaged by Hurricane Helene are especially prone to impacts. Always look up before stopping or setting up camp on the A.T. and never stop or camp near dead, diseased, damaged, or leaning standing trees. Hikers who visit the Trail after the storms should be prepared to encounter storm damage.
