Cherokee National Forest is anticipating conducting debris removal work beginning on Wednesday, September 16th along a section of the Elk River between approximately NOBO mile 401.7 and Sugar Hollow (NOBO mile 402). From the Elk River Falls Road access gate (NOBO mile 401.6) through the work area on the trail, hikers should expect heavy equipment traffic, active staging, and crews working along and across the access road and trail as materials are moved. In the river corridor, along the trail, and access road, contractors will use excavators, dump trucks, and a self‑loader debris truck to gather, cut, stage, and remove storm‑related material. Hikers should anticipate loud machinery & chainsaws, and debris handling. Workers will be in high‑visibility safety gear throughout the approach and work zone. All hikers will be safely escorted through the area by on-site staff. Hikers should follow crew instructions and written guidance. Should debris removal operations begin on 9/16/26, work is anticipated to continue through the following week.
