ME | Construction
07/13/2026
The Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC) and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) will be doing privy construction projects at the Spaulding Mountain, Avery Memorial, and Safford Notch campsites during the week of August 5 - 11 (NOBO miles 1,996.0, 2,017.5, and 2,019.9). Over the course of two days during that period, 15,000 pounds of lumber and tools will be flown into those sites via helicopter. Additionally, 3,500 pounds of excess materials used for lean-to repairs will be flown out of the Horns Pond campsite (NOBO mile 2,014.6).
The final dates during the time period above are weather dependent. Volunteers will be onsite to assist and direct hikers. Follow all instructions from volunteers and posted signs, and stay out of the immediate work area for your safety and the safety of the work crews. Do not move or disturb construction materials and tools.
Camping will still be available at all sites during the project. Privy access may be limited. Contact us or the MATC with questions or for more information.
