The National Hurricane Center has updated the predicted track of Hurricane Isaias, which is now expected to impact the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Heavy rain, flash floods, and high winds are predicted along the Trail from Georgia through southwest Virginia, with possible heavy rain and flash flooding into central Virginia.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park will close Newfound Gap Road at 8:00 p.m. tonight ahead of the storm.
High winds can cause downed trees, and heavy rains can cause river and stream levels to become dangerous and cause landslides. Areas impacted by Hurricane Helene in 2024 are especially high risk because the landscape is still recovering.
Hikers should consider postponing hikes along the southern part of the A.T. until after the storm. Hikers on the A.T. this weekend and immediately after the storm should be extremely careful to stay away from standing dead, diseased, or damaged trees. Dead and damaged trees can fall at any time and be deadly.
Visit the National Hurricane Center for more information about Isaias and check weather.gov before heading out on the Trail.
