Connecticut: Limestone Springs Shelter Closed

Limestone Springs Shelter is closed due to damage from a fallen tree (NOBO mile 1,503.1). The initial report indicates that the tree damaged the shelter wall, roof, and structural beams. The shelter is closed until further notice to give staff and volunteers with the AMC-Connecticut Chapter the opportunity to assess the damage. Depending on the severity of the damage, the shelter could remain closed for several months. The campsite and privy remain open.

There may also be more potentially hazardous trees around the shelter. Always look up before stopping or setting up camp and stay away from standing trees that are damaged, diseased, dead, or leaning.

Hikers should avoid the shelter and plan to use the campsite, or plan to stay at the closest nearby shelter:

  • Riga Shelter is 7.4 miles to the north.
  • Pine Swamp Brook Shelter is 12.7 miles to the south.

All Appalachian Trail (A.T.) hikers and visitors should keep in mind that the Trail and its structures are not managed for winter use. New England has had quite a bit of snow and ice this winter, which can cause hazardous conditions. More snow is in the forecast for this weekend.

Thank you to the person who reported the shelter damage to ATC! You can report concerning Trail conditions to ATC and our partners by email trailconditions@appalachiantrail.org or submitting an incident report. We will update this notice when we have more information.
