Every year, the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) hangtag can be seen dangling from the backpacks of thousands of hikers as they attempt to tackle the entire Trail, whether in one continuous thru-hike or over a series of section hikes.
The color of the hangtag changes each year, with the 2026 hangtag color, “Black Bear,” reminding hikers to be bear aware and protect wildlife by practicing Leave No Trace principles. For 2027, the color of the hangtags were once again up to the hikers and Trail community!

This vibrant green captures the electric excitement of starting a new adventure and the importance of preparing for it. Whether it’s Basecamp, ATCamp.org, the A.T. Data Book, or the ATC’s website, the right resources can help you start strong.
Signal
Impossible to miss, just like the commitment you’ve made to follow the long-distance hiker pledge on the back of each hangtag. This bright yellow signals to others not only that you’re a long-distance hiker, but that you’ve committed to caring for the Trail.
