Alex Abair

Project Compliance Coordinator

Alex’s path to the Appalachian Trail has taken him through a wide range of landscapes and disciplines, shaping a deep appreciation for ecology, place, and the ways people interact with land over time. He has lived and worked in Wisconsin, Oregon, New Mexico, Florida, and Virginia, and recently moved to Charles Town, West Virginia, where he is looking forward to living and working close to the Trail.

Alex holds degrees in archaeology, plant systematics, and studio art, and has taught college-level courses in botany, photography, and art history. Most recently, he worked as a Biological Science Technician at Shenandoah National Park, where he supported natural resource monitoring and management efforts and began working directly on and around the Appalachian Trail. His work brings together field science, documentation, and public-facing communication, with a particular focus on plants, landscape change, and conservation data.

An avid hiker and photographer, Alex is also an active contributor to iNaturalist and Wikipedia, where he helps document plant diversity and make natural history information more accessible to the public. When he’s not in the field or behind a camera, he enjoys exploring new trails, contributing to open science projects, and finding ways to connect science, art, and conservation.
