Hike Description

Washington Monument State Park in Maryland contains the first monument to George Washington in the country.

  1. The Trail from the parking lot is graded gravel with logs crossing the path in several places to minimize erosion. After a gentle but steady uphill section (less than 0.1 mile), the A.T. turns right down the hill and a side trail leads in about 500 feet to the monument. To reach the top of the monument requires climbing a few dozen steps. This area is part of the Atlantic flyway and migrating hawks can be seen at certain times of the year.
  2. Retrace your steps back to the parking area, or continue further down the A.T. for a while before heading back for a longer hike.

Directions

Four miles east of Boonsboro and 1 1/2 miles north of Alternate Route 40 on Monument Road. The trail is accessible but not the monument tower.
