Make a tax-savvy, efficient gift that protects the Appalachian Trail, today and for the next century.
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is like your own personal charitable account: you contribute cash or appreciated assets, receive an immediate charitable deduction (subject to IRS rules), and then recommend grants to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) on your timeline.
Why Give a DAF Gift to ATC?
- Mission impact, made simple. Recommend a grant to ATC whenever you’re ready, so we can act confidently on urgent stewardship needs and long-term priorities for the Appalachian Trail.
- Tax efficiency. You may claim a federal charitable income tax deduction in each year you contribute to your fund. There is no capital gains tax due on appreciated assets, and the gifts may reduce your gross taxable estate.
- Flexible, anytime support. Recommend one-time or recurring grants to fuel work that advances conservation, strengthens the Trail, and keeps it welcoming for all who hike it.
- Less paperwork. The financial institution managing your DAF handles receipting and administration; you focus on your impact.
ATC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Notifying ATC
Financial institutions that manage donor-advised funds sometimes send grants without donor contact information. To ensure we can acknowledge your generosity and share impact updates, please let us know when you’ve recommended a grant:
Email: DAF@appalachiantrail.org
Phone: 304-885-0460
Include your name, grant amount, name of your financial institution, and any designation.
Using a DAF for Legacy Intentions
You can name ATC as a beneficiary of your DAF to continue your impact beyond your lifetime. If you do, we invite you to let us know by completing our non-binding Legacy Confirmation Form. It is simply a trusted promise that helps ATC plan with confidence and steward you as a cherished Legacy Society member.
We’re here to help.
