Kathryn Herndon-Powell

Regional Director, the Virginias

Kathryn is honored to support trail operations on the A.T. from the Tennessee border just south of Damascus, VA to the Potomac River in Harpers Ferry, WV. She is inspired on a daily basis by the power of partnership and the deep love for the Trail found in the Virginias' A.T. Maintaining Clubs, land management agencies, and local communities.

After graduating from Hollins University, Kathryn thru-hiked the A.T. in 2006 and the Pacific Crest Trail in 2010. Bookending those epic journeys, she discovered the rewards of trail stewardship while working as a backcountry caretaker in Vermont and a trail crew leader on ATC's storied Konnarock Trail Crew. She joined ATC's year-round staff in 2013 as Education & Outreach Coordinator, and later served as Central Virginia Regional Manager before stepping into the Regional Director role in 2024. Based in Roanoke, her hikes are a little shorter these days — but no less magical — as she explores the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains with her wife and two small children.
