In Memory of Former ATC Board Member Clark Dixon

Appalachian Trail Conservancy Staff Celebrate the Life of Clark Dixon, Former ATC Board Member and Dedicated Conservationist

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy was recently informed of the passing of Clark Dixon, a conservation advocate and former member of the ATC Board of Directors. Dixon served with the ATC from 2009 to 2011, providing a wealth of insight developed over decades of experience.

Dixon’s contributions to conservation included a 33-year career with the National Park Service (NPS). During this time, he served as Superintendent of Arkansas Post National Memorial, Superintendent of Morristown National Historical Park, and NPS Program Manager for the Southeast Region. Other Federal positions held by Dixon include U.S. Army Military Police; Resident Youth Worker and Recreation Specialist Harpers Ferry Job Corps Center; Crew Leader with the Young Adult Conservation Corps; Supervisory Park Ranger for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Visitor Services and Fee Program; and Site Manager Rock Creek Park Nature Center.

In addition to his role on the ATC Board of Directors, Dixon also served as a Board member for Boy Scouts of America, Shenandoah National Park Association, Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, Berkeley/Jefferson Extension Master Gardeners, and Potomac Valley Audubon Society. He was also an active member of the Harpers Ferry-Bolivar Trail and Town Alliance.

“To say that Clark had an impact on the conservation of America’s great public lands, including the Appalachian Trail, would be an understatement,” said Sandi Marra, President and CEO of the ATC. “Clark’s passion for preserving public lands and introducing new people to the great outdoors was always on clear display, and I consider myself extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to work with him. He will be deeply missed.”
