The West Virginia Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration plan to begin the U.S. 340 Rock Slide Repair Project on September 12, 2023, to address safety issues associated with the rockfalls in the area.
Due to the geography of the area and the high volume of daily traffic, area traffic will be impacted greatly. A planned detour will be utilized to bypass the one-mile repair area. The detour is 22 miles in length and will add 35 minutes, at a minimum, to travel times. The detour is expected to last 90 calendar days.
This closure will affect all vehicle travel in and around the Harpers Ferry area and thoughtful travel planning during this closure is highly recommended.
This closure will not affect parking access to the Appalachian Trail (A.T.).
