Virginia – Partial Camping Closure – Cow Camp Gap Shelter UPDATED 1/26/2023

Camping Closure

Update: The hazard trees have been taken down and all camping areas near Cow Camp Gap Shelter (NOBO mile 812.9) have re-opened. Hikers may encounter the downed trees in the camping area before they are fully removed, but they are no longer a danger to visitors.

A camping area near Cow Camp Gap Shelter (NOBO mile 812.9), separated from the rest of the shelter site by a short side trail that originates near the privy, is temporarily closed due to hazard trees in the area. A sign on the side trail indicates the closed area. Other camping areas closer to the shelter and the shelter itself remain open.

The closed camping area will reopen once the hazards identified have been removed. Appalachian Trail hikers should always look up and around for overhead hazards when selecting a campsite.

We will update this notice when we have more information.
