Update: The Green Mountain Club (GMC) and volunteers with the GMC’s Killington Section recommend hikers walk or shuttle around from Route 140 via East Street.
NOBO (northbound) Directions. Total detour = 6.7 miles.
- Turn left onto Route 140 and follow it for 1.6 miles to East Street. Cars travel fast along 140; be extremely careful and make sure vehicles can see you. Do not walk the road at night.
- Take a sharp right onto East Street and follow it for 4.3 miles to the intersection with Gorge Road, shortly after passing over Kingsley Covered Bridge. Note that after the first 0.1 mi on East Street, the road bears left.
- Turn right on Gorge Road and continue on Gorge Road to where it merges with Airport Road, and continue to Pluss Lane (total of 0.4 mi; note that if you continue on Airplane Lane you’ll also come out on 103 after a short distance).
- Airport Road makes a lefthand turn. On this corner, turn right onto Pluss Lane and follow it for 0.3 mi to the intersection with Route 103.
- Turn right on Route 103 and follow it for 0.1 mi to the intersection with the A.T. & Long Trail. Turn left on the Trail and cross the road to head north. Cars travel fast along Route 103; be extremely careful and make sure vehicles can see you.
The A.T. corridor for this section is narrow and most of the land surrounding the corridor is privately owned, so a shorter detour or reroute is not available. Hikers should not attempt to find an alternative route using woods roads in this area. Visit the GMC’s website for more information.

Update: The bridge remains closed. However, the Green Mountain Club hopes to make repairs to the bridge in late May. Do not attempt to use the bridge or ford the river; it can be very dangerous in high-water conditions.
Until the bridge is repaired, the official detour for A.T. hikers is walking the road or arranging a shuttle ride between the Trail crossing at Route 140 and Route 103 (NOBO miles 1,684.2 and 1,690.5). Both walking and shuttling are viable options for ATC’s 2,000-miler program. If you decide to walk along the road, be extremely careful: wear bright colors, do not walk the road at night, and make sure drivers can see you.

The Clarendon Gorge Bridge where the A.T. crosses the Mill River is closed effective immediately due to structural failure (NOBO mile 1,690.4; also called the Bob Brugmann Suspension Bridge or the Mill River Suspension Bridge). The bridge is not safe to use and is officially closed by the U.S. Forest Service. Hikers may be cited for using the bridge.
There is no good crossing for the river nearby. Northbound hikers should plan to leave the A.T. at Route 140 and get back on at Route 103, just north of the bridge (NOBO miles 1,684.2 and 1,690.5). We will share more information and an official detour as soon as possible.
