The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct the Glade Mountain prescribed burn on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. For public safety, the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) will be temporarily closed during burn operations between the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area Headquarters at VA Route 16 and VA Route 615/Settlers Museum (NOBO miles 534.3 to 542.9).
USFS road 86/Glade Mountain Road (NOBO mile 538.3), Chatfield Shelter (NOBO mile 541.1), and USFS road 644 (NOBO mile 541.4) will also be closed during the burn. Partnership Shelter (NOBO mile 534.1) will remain open.
A shuttle service will be available to hikers to/from the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area Headquarters and the Settlers Museum during burn operations and into the following day (Thursday, March 30). Trail and road closure signs will be posted. Hikers should follow all instructions from posted signs and USFS fire crews, and plan to use the shuttle service. For thru-hikers and section hikers intending to complete the entire Trail, the shuttle service will be considered the official route of the A.T. during the burn.
The surrounding area may experience lingering smoke effects following the burn.
