Southwest Virginia – Bear Activity – Helvey Mills Shelter Area
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) has received reports of bear activity just south of where the Appalachian Trail crosses I-77 to Helveys Mill Shelter (NOBO miles 592.2 to 594.0), including reports that bears in the area showed no fear of humans and entered the shelter. All area visitors should use caution and keep in mind that bears can roam over large distances in search of food. Hikers should keep a clean camp, store all “smellables” properly, and never leave food unattended. The ATC recommends that all overnight hikers use a bear canister for the duration of their trip.
