North Carolina – Shelter Closure – Rock Gap Shelter

North Carolina

The Nantahala Hiking Club, which maintains the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) from Bly Gap to the Nantahala River, will be replacing Rock Gap Shelter (NOBO mile 105.6) starting tomorrow, November 9. The project is being done in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and U.S. Forest Service.

Rock Gap Shelter is being replaced due to age and condition. The demolition of the current structure will begin tomorrow and the rebuild project is expected to take four to six weeks.

While the new shelter is being constructed, the privy will remain open for use. Camping around the shelter is also expected to remain open but may close temporarily for materials to be staged near the shelter. We will update this notice when we have more information.

Hikers should plan to stay out of the immediate construction zone. For more information, contact the Nantahala Ranger District of the Nantahala National Forest at 828-524-6441 ext. 424.
