A highway improvement project in the vicinity of Robbinsville, NC will affect the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) crossing at U.S. Highway 143/Stecoah Gap (NOBO mile 150.5).  Passage across Highway 143 will be possible during construction, but Trail users may be delayed while waiting for vehicles to pass and for permission from road flaggers to safely proceed across the highway.

Part of the project includes building a land bridge across Highway 143 at Stecoah Gap, which will improve passage for wildlife and safety for hikers at the crossing.

Hikers should use caution when crossing the highway, anticipate delays, and follow all directions from road crews and flaggers. The small parking lot at Stecoah Gap will remain open for most of the project, but drivers should expect delays.

It is expected that these delays will occur for at least two years. We will update this notice when we have more information. To learn more about the project, visit: https://www.ncdot.gov/projects/corridor-k/Pages/default.aspx
