The road across Fontana Dam is closed to vehicle traffic from 10/3/2022 through 3/31/2023 due to maintenance at the dam. Foot traffic is permitted, and hikers can follow the Appalachian Trail north across the Dam to the Lakeshore trailhead. There is a small detour routing hikers away from the work zone near the dam visitor center, see the map below.
Parking is still allowed at the dam for up to 2-3 days. Visitors must leave a note visible on the dash with their name, best contact phone number, and estimated date of return.
