The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will conduct the Deweese Ridge prescribed burn anytime between now and March 9, depending on weather. Current snowy conditions mean that the burn will likely not happen until March 1 or later. The burn will occur along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) from Licklog Gap to where the Trail intersects with old Forest Service Road 7110 (FR 7110; NOBO miles 121.9 to 123.4).
USFS fire crews may ask hikers to wait for short periods of time during the burn, but the A.T. in that area will likely not fully close.
Prescribed burns are weather dependent and advanced notice of burns is not always possible. Hikers should always follow instructions from posted signs and fire crews. For more information about the benefits of prescribed burns, visit the USFS website.
Please note that an earlier version of this alert stated that the A.T. was closed for the burn. This is incorrect. ATC has confirmed with USFS staff that the A.T. is currently open in this section and will likely not close during the burn itself.
