Due to dry conditions, the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast is facing extreme wildfire danger. This includes the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The Governor of Connecticut has declared a state of emergency due to the extreme fire danger in the state, and Maryland, Connecticut and Massachusetts have active wildfires (not all of which are on the A.T.).

New Jersey, Connecticut, and Vermont have statewide burn bans in effect. Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York have burn bans in place in several counties. New Hampshire has issued a red flag warning, and dry conditions persist in Massachusetts and Maine. Massachusetts has a standing burn ban in place from May 2 – January 14 each year (so in effect now).

  • Campfires are never permitted along the A.T. in Connecticut, but visitors should exercise extra caution during the ban.
  • Hikers should avoid having campfires in states and counties where burn bans are in place. Check with the local fire department before you go.
  • Hikers should consider forgoing a campfire anywhere on the A.T. from Maryland to Maine while the high fire danger continues.
