Update: The Butternut Fire is now contained thanks to recent rain and the good work of firefighters on the ground. The A.T. remains closed between between Boardman Street and Lake Buel Road (NOBO miles 1,529.3 to 1,535.5) as fire crews monitor for hot spots. Hikers should continue to avoid this area and follow all instructions from posted signs and fire crews.

Update: The Butternut Fire remains uncontained and has burned over 1,100 acres. The A.T. remains closed between between Boardman Street and Lake Buel Road, including Tom Leonard Shelter. (NOBO miles 1,529.3 to 1,535.5). Hikers should continue to avoid this area and follow all instructions from posted signs and fire crews.

Update: Officials with the State of Massachusetts and the National Park Service have closed the A.T. between Boardman Street and Lake Buel Road, including Tom Leonard Shelter. (NOBO miles 1,529.3 to 1,535.5).
Hikers should avoid this area and follow all instructions from posted signs and fire crews. We will update this notice with more information as we receive it.

The Butternut Mountain Fire has been reported just west of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) outside of Great Barrington. The fire, which began last night, is burning on East Mountain and threatening the section of the A.T. between Home Road (Brush Hill Road) and Lake Buel Road (NOBO miles 1,530.9 to 1,535.5). This includes Tom Leonard Shelter.
For safety, the ATC recommends hikers avoid this section of the Trail. We will share any official closures and more information when we receive it.
