Update

03/24/2023

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) plans to conduct nighttime maintenance work this spring on U.S. 340 where the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) crosses under the highway bridge (NOBO mile 1,029.5), just north of Keep Tryst Road. Since the work involves paint removal using abrasive blasting, MDOT will drape tarps from the underside of the highway bridge to the ground to protect the Trail from blasting and debris. From sunset to sunrise, the tarps will be set up and MDOT personnel will be stationed on either side of the underpass to direct hikers. MDOT personnel will ask hikers to stop for approximately 15 minutes at a time until blasting can be paused and the tarps safely lifted. Hikers will then be able to pass through.

During daylight hours the A.T. in this area will be fully open.

Hikers should follow all directions from signs and MDOT personnel during the project and use exercise caution when approaching the underpass during nighttime hours.

We will share dates for the project and update this notice when we have more information.
