Update: Due to weather delays, the KI Road will remain closed to through traffic likely into mid-September. The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) will remain open. Visitors will still be able to access the 100 Mile Wilderness via either end of the road. Those wishing to access the A.T. via the nearest parking area (the Gulf Hagas parking lot) will need to do so via the KI gate on the Brownville side (the east side).

Tentatively beginning on August 7, 2023, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), the Appalachian Mountain Club, and the National Park Service will replace the Henderson Brook culvert on the Katahdin Ironworks Road (KI Road) with a bridge. The KI Road (NOBO mile 2,113.8) will be closed to vehicular through traffic for the duration of the project, which is expected to take at least three weeks to complete. The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) will remain open throughout the project and the Trail has already been re-routed away from the construction site. Hikers should follow the new re-route and all area visitors should stay out of the construction zone.
While the KI Road will be closed to through traffic during the project, visitors will still be able to access the 100 Mile Wilderness via either end of the road. Those wishing to access the A.T. via the nearest parking area (the Gulf Hagas parking lot) will need to do so via the KI gate on the Brownville side (the east side).
This project will restore access to high-quality cold-water habitat for wild brook trout and native Atlantic salmon. Read more about the important role Henderson Brook plays in the migration routes of these species.
We will update this notice as we have more information. Project dates are subject to change based on weather and conditions.
