Maine – High Water – Big Wilson Stream

09/14/2024

The ATC has received several reports of high water at Big Wilson Stream in the 100 Mile Wilderness (NOBO mile 2,092.4) despite relatively dry conditions in the region and seasonally low water at other stream crossings. The high water at the Big Wilson Stream crossing could be due to dam releases upstream. Hikers report thigh-to-chest deep water at the crossing, making for potentially dangerous conditions.

Hikers should exercise extreme caution at this crossing. Hikers may need to wait for water levels to go down and should pack extra food and supplies in case they are delayed due to the high water.

All hikers should learn how to safely ford rivers and streams on the Appalachian Trail, and how to tell when a crossing is not safe to ford. Learn more on our River & Stream Crossing page.
