Celebrating 100 Years of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy

How You Can Take Action

March 6, 2025

On March 3, 2025, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy celebrated the milestone of protecting, managing, and advocating for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail for 100 years. What began as the Appalachian Trail Conference, uniting visionaries to blaze the way, has become the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, safeguarding the Trail’s realm for generations to come. As we celebrate a century of dedication, we look forward to the next 100 years of stewardship, adventure, and community. If you love the A.T. and want to support its future, here are five impactful ways to get involved and make a difference.

1. Make an Impact with a Donation

If you’ve ever been inspired by the A.T., now is the perfect time to give back. No donation is too small—every dollar helps protect the Trail for the next 100 years.

2. Become a Member of the ATC

One of the easiest and most meaningful ways to support the ATC is by becoming a member, and any gift of $50 or more will make you a member of the ATC! As a member, you’ll fund conservation efforts, trail maintenance, and advocacy initiatives that protect the A.T. A membership also connects you with a passionate community of hikers, volunteers, and supporters who care deeply about the Trail. Whether you’re a thru-hiker, a section hiker, or someone who simply values the natural beauty of the A.T., joining the ATC helps safeguard its future.

3. Volunteer to Help Maintain the Trail

The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, spanning over 2,190 miles. Keeping it well-maintained and accessible requires a dedicated network of volunteers. Whether you have a few hours or a full weekend to spare, there are plenty of ways to get involved—from trail maintenance and invasive species removal to outreach and education programs.

Volunteering is also a great way to connect with others who love the outdoors and experience the Trail in a whole new way. Find a volunteer opportunity near you at appalachiantrail.org/waystovolunteer.

4. Stay Informed: Subscribe to ATC Newsletters

Knowledge is power, and staying informed about the latest updates, conservation efforts, and upcoming events is a simple yet effective way to support the ATC. By subscribing to ATC’s newsletters, you’ll receive important news about Trail conditions, information and guidance for experiencing the Trail, and inspiring stories.

5. Practice Leave No Trace

One of the most important ways you can support the A.T. is by being a responsible steward when you’re out on the Trail. Following Leave No Trace principles helps minimize human impact and keeps the Trail alive for future hikers. Simple actions like packing out all trash, staying on designated trails, respecting wildlife, and camping responsibly can make a huge difference.

By committing to Leave No Trace principles, you’re actively protecting the A.T. every time you step foot on it. Learn more at appalachiantrail.org/lnt
