After completing a decade-long section hike of the entire Appalachian Trail (A.T.), Michele and Dan Coleman discuss the joy (and challenges) of hiking with children, the community of hikers and Trail-lovers they met along the way, and how spreading out their adventure over time taught them to savor every moment.

Wild East Action Fund’s Grant Application Period Opens Monday
We are excited to announce that the 2022 application period for the Wild East Action Fund (WEAF) will open on Monday, August 15. Since 2018, the WEAF has supported a variety of land protection and conservation capacity-building projects that have accelerated the pace of conservation within the A.T. landscape. This funding opportunity is available to nonprofit organizations and public agencies that support the mission of the A.T. Landscape Partnership.
Trail Updates
Riga and Brassie Brook Shelters in Connecticut to be closed, rebuilt.
After 40 years of service, these shelters are due for replacement. Brassie Brook Shelter demolition has begun, and Riga Shelter will close on September 3 for work to begin.
Bear activity reported along the A.T. in North Georgia.
We have received reports of a bear stealing a food bag at Jarrard Gap (NOBO mile 26.3) and an aggressive bear at Blood Mountain (NOBO mile 28.9). The ATC recommends all overnight A.T. campers use bear-resistant food storage containers.
Don’t forget: the Damascus Trail Center opens on August 27.
Join us in just two weeks for the grand opening of the newly-built Trail Center, which is designed to help visitors prepare for outdoor adventures and introduce them to Trail stewardship and volunteerism.

Attend the A.T. Hall of Fame Induction Event on October 1 – This outdoor ceremony in honor of this year’s inductees — including longtime ATC Information Services Manager Laurie Potteiger — begins at 1:30 p.m. at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. The ceremony is free but registration is required due to limited space — send an email to atmbanquet@gmail.com to register.
