The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, the Southern Regional Office of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), and Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) are pleased to coordinate the 22nd Annual Appalachian Trail Work Day in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on National Trails Day. We invite you to participate in helping us take care of the A.T. in GSMNP.
The A.T. Maintainers Committee of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club and the ATC are responsible for maintaining the A.T. and its facilities in GSMNP on a continuing basis. With your help on National Trails Day, important trail maintenance projects are completed that otherwise would not be accomplished. These improvements make the Appalachian Trail in the Smokies safer and more enjoyable for the thousands of hikers who use the Trail each year.
Volunteers will be assigned to work groups to perform important trail maintenance projects. Tools will be provided. Workers should wear layered clothing and sturdy footwear, and bring water, lunch/snacks, rain gear, work gloves, sunscreen and insect repellent.
Workers will receive a commemorative t-shirt and a picnic at day’s end.
Attendees should meet at the bus parking area at the Sugarlands Visitor Center at 7:30 am. The visitor center is located at intersection of US 441 and Little River Road, approximately 2 miles south of Gatlinburg, TN.
This event does require a registration fee of $25.00 ($20.00 if postmarked before May 15). Funds will be used to improve the Appalachian Trail. Please make checks payable to Smoky Mountains Hiking Club.
Pre-registration is required. A registration form can be filled out online here or can be mailed in using this form. If registering online, please be sure to send your registration fee to Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, c/o Don Dunning, 11536 Gates Mill Drive, Knoxville, TN 37934.
