David Grimes of Ashland, Virginia has been a member of the Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club (ODATC) since 2012 and has served as President (2015 – 2019), RPC representative, Vice President and Outreach Coordinator. David is also a section maintainer, Konnarock volunteer, boundary monitor and hike leader on the Rockfish Gap to Reed’s Gap section of the AT. In his various roles, David has coordinated with outside funding groups including the Virginia Department of Transportation, L.L. Bean and REI to construct trail improvement projects such as the Rockfish Gap stairs at the start of the southern region of the AT. David has section hiked more than a third of the AT since 2015.
David holds BS and MS degrees in environmental biology and has 40(+) years of experience in the environmental field where he has worked in consulting, private industry, Federal and State government and academia. His work on NEPA regulated projects formed the basis for ODATC’s comments to FERC on the Atlantic Coast Pipeline which was relocated from the Paul Wolfe Shelter – Mill Creek area to the Reed’s Gap area. David is an advocate of public lands acquisition and protection. In 2018 he worked with the University of Richmond’s Robins School of Business to conduct an economic impact analysis of the AT in Nelson County to develop economic data for resource protection and AT Community engagement.
